Which way is the camera facing?
Since we launched our live camera sites, we have received many questions asking "Which way is the camera facing?" Unfortunately, we cannot currently provide directional information beside the camera image. This is because the cameras, which are controlled by operators at the Ministry of Transportation, can be rotated 360 degrees as well as zoomed, panned and tilted. The computers which run the camera system cannot interpret this directional information for our web site at this time.
In the meantime, here are some tips to help you find out which way the camera is pointing. For example:
When there is no incident to monitor, the cameras are usually zoomed out and pointing in a direction such that the sun is behind the camera in order to reserve the lens' life. Therefore, during sunrise the cameras are generally pointing west and during sunset they are pointing east.
The map is designed so that the location of the dots reflects the actual location of the camera poles along the highways. Therefore a dot located on the north side of the highway means that the camera is located on the north side of the highway.
Most of the camera poles along Highway 401 and the QEW are located on the south side of the highway. Therefore the lanes closest to the camera eye are the eastbound collector lanes.
The camera poles along highways that are running north and south (e.g., Highway 404) are usually located on the east side of the highway. Therefore the lanes closest to the camera eye are the northbound lanes.
